THE ANC's executive committee in KwaZulu-Natal will convene the provincial local government summit this weekend on challenges faced by the local government in the province.

Provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala, pictured above, said the summit comes in the wake of the assessment of service delivery conducted at municipalities earlier this month.

" The observations were that the state of local government needed urgent attention from the national and provincial government and that the ANC should play an oversight role," he said.

He said the PEC took the decision to convene the summit in order to address a range of challenges as part of its preparations for the Local Government Elections in 2011.

All MECs, ANC mayors, speakers, chief whips and councillors and other government deployees will be expected to attend this summit, which will take place in Durban at the Durban University of Technology Cane Growers hall (ML Sultan Campus).
