SABC trio put on ice over graft

Three top SABC executives have been suspended following revelations by the auditor-general's investigation into how the public broadcaster squandered millions of rands.

Three top SABC executives have been suspended following revelations by the auditor-general's investigation into how the public broadcaster squandered millions of rands.

Sowetan has learnt that Mvuzo Mbebe, head of public enterprise, Mabela Satekge, head of procurement, and chief financial officer Robin Nicholson were suspended yesterday pending the outcome of an internal hearing.

In a report discussed in Parliament last week, Mbebe, Nicholson and Satekge were implicated in financial irregularities involving tenders.

The investigation examined supply chain management, fruitless and wasteful expenditure and human resource issues. A tender valued at more than R300million was awarded without authorisation.

The report also revealed that procurement procedures were not followed and that payments exceeded contract amounts.

Kaizer Kganyago, the SABC spokesperson, said he was not aware of the trio's suspension as he was on leave.
