Griquas a win away from semis berth

GRIQUAS need four points out of the two remaining matches to book a place in this year's semifinals of the lucrative Absa Currie Cup set for October 17.

GRIQUAS need four points out of the two remaining matches to book a place in this year's semifinals of the lucrative Absa Currie Cup set for October 17.

The Kimberley side are away to the Blue Bulls on Saturday at Loftus and face the Sharks in Durban on October 10 to wrap up the league phase.

The Bulls will be without the injured Chiliboy Ralepelle.

Team doctor Org Strauss said yesterday that the injury could sideline the Springbok hooker for two weeks.

Ralepelle suffered a hairline fracture to his foot in their match against the Cheetahs at the weekend.

Griquas coach Dawie Theron believes that the race for a semifinal spot is still within reach.

Currently, the Griquas are in third position with 38 points, seven points behind log leaders the Sharks and six behind second-placed Western Province.

"We only need four points to earn a semifinals spot. A victory against either the Bulls or the Sharks will be good enough to keep our hopes alive," Theron said.

After their 43-3 loss at the hands of Western Province at Newlands at the weekend, Theron is hopeful that they will bounce back at the Bulls' expense.

Other teams that are also fighting for a semifinal berth include the fourth-placed Bulls (36 points), the Lions (30 points) and the Cheetahs (30).

Meanwhile, Cheetahs captain Adriaan Strauss has been ruled out of Friday's game against the Leopards in Bloemfontein.

The reliable hooker injured his thumb during their nail-biting contest against the Bulls in Pretoria at the weekend.

l Weekend fixtures:

Friday - Cheetahs v Leopards (Bloemfontein)

Saturday - Bulls v Griquas (Loftus), Western Province v Boland (Newlands), Sharks v Lions (Durban).
