CONCERNED and angry women at KwaMashu men's hostel in KwaZulu-Natal are calling for tougher law enforcement after the rape and killing of a two-year-old girl.

The women say they are sick and tired of crime at the hostel and in the township, especially incidents where women and children are targeted.

The hostel was formerly a male-only hostel but has recently been turned into family units.

The two-year-old was asleep on Saturday night when her 18-year-old mother went out of the house and left the door unlocked.

She told the police that when she came back she found a man known to her, as he also resides in the area, inside the house.

When she tried to get inside the house the man blocked the door, refusing her entry while assaulting and threatening her with a knife.

Police spokesperson Mumsy Mfeka said that when police arrived on the scene they found the body ofthe child lying on the floor with her legs wide open. She had been raped.

"The child had bruises all over the neck as if she had been strangled," Mfeka said.

Police arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the case and he appeared in the Verulam magistrate's court yesterday on charges of murder, assault and rape.

The incident has left the community of KwaMashu in fear. The 18-year-old mother is still too traumatised to talk about the incident.

The incident comes barely a few days after Police Minister Nathi Mthetwa released shocking statistics of crime, with KwaMashu being the hardest hit township in KwaZulu-Natal.
