Fifa happy with 2010 progress

FIFA is expected to give South Africa a big thumbs up in its preparations for the 2010 World Cup finals after a week-long inspection tour of the match and training venues.

The inspection tour will end this morning at Soccer City, Johannesburg, the venue that will be used for the opening and closing ceremonies of the event.

A source close to Fifa said the technical committee from the world soccer governing body was impressed by the level of preparation in all the host cities.

In the past six days, its 40-odd members, accompanied by representatives of the Local Organising Committee, inspected all the new World Cup stadiums.

In Polokwane yesterday, the inspectors were happy that the new stadium was nearing completion, but called for more speed in upgrading the existing Peter Mokaba Stadium.
