Colour up your Spring
SPRING stirs up a sense of freshness and new beginnings, with sprouting shoots and blossoming flowers inspiring designers to break out of the winter despair. It is the time to liven up the lounge with bright colours.
According to Claire Clarke of By Dezign, leading interior designers located at BluBird Centre in Joburg, the big news for Spring 2009 is colour - bright, fun, and lots of it.
Clarke adds that traditional furniture pieces in bolder and more contemporary fabrics with an accent on geometrics and florals in bright colours like sizzling chartreuse and pink are in. She says that bright yellows and grass green tones are also making a big comeback .
"Old is new again is another strong refrain for Spring 2009 and the retro look is IT. Far from being old-fashioned, shape and style is showcased in the most modern settings. Oversized dimensions create a comfortable sense of luxury, and combined with acid citrus shades, they add a boost to your home."
She says that an easy, quick way to reinvent a space without spending a fortune is to use vibrant seasonal colours in scatter cushions or as a tablecloth for those long outdoor Sunday lunches.
Raymond Louw, a trend setter and interior decorator says, trends are also moving toward furnishing homes with the tropical, exotic and simple styles of tribes and countries with a different taste of culture and heritage.
"You can find items in this category like dark, weaved wicker or rattan, or items made of bamboo, or Oriental carvings and accents. If you don't want to make a long term investment in matching up this piece, you can go for some pillows that you can swap out when you get tired of them," says Louw.
Louw says many living room furniture designers preach proportion and balance in their design. But as trends move toward things like "odd number of shelving" for wall decor, the same goes for the size of your furniture, such as an oversized sectional or coffee table ottoman. Just be sure to leave enough room in your floor plan or your home will look small, but with the super size factor in a focused piece of furniture it will help you centre your design as you make your living room furniture choices the best furniture for your family.
