Cash crunch forces Mexico to drop its Cup bids

MEXICO - Mexico yesterday withdrew its bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, blaming the economic crisis.

"The current world economic environment and the short-term prospects permit neither the federation nor the federal and local governments to make the necessary investment commitments to finance the work that must be undertaken," the national football federation said.

Mexico staged the 1970 and 1986 Cups and has enough stadiums to host the event but most require major renovation.

Fifa will announce the hosts of the 2018 and 2022 Cups at the end of 2010.

England, Australia, the US, Indonesia, Japan, Russia and a joint bid from Spain and Portugal are the remaining candidates for 2018 and 2022. South Korea and Qatar have bid for the 2022 edition. - Sapa-AFP
