THE ANC has rejected calls by the DA for the chairperson of the portfolio committee on defence and military veterans to resign after he pleaded guilty on Monday to theft.

The DA called for Nyami Booi to demonstrate an "ethos of accountability" by resigning from his post after he pleaded guilty in the Cape Town regional court.

ANC parliamentary caucus spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said yesterday the party was guided by the Constitution, which exonerated Booi from resigning.

Booi was fined R50000 after pleading guilty to abusing travel warrants issued by Parliament. He admitted to using R92000 worth of travel vouchers - issued by Parliament only for flights - for car rental and hotel accommodation worth R20000.

The court gave Booi until January 2014 to pay the fine.
