A LIMPOPO family is fuming over the department of education's failure to provide their daughter with a candidate number in order for her to sit her final year matric examinations.

The matric student was allegedly told that she would have to repeat the class next year.

Refilwe Mathebe, 19, of St Gregory's College in Groblersdal, has successfully completed her trial examinations this month and was preparing to write her final exams in less than a month.

But two weeks ago, her school allegedly informed her that she would not write examinations because the department did not provide them with her candidate number.

The depressed matriculant told Sowetan that she was shocked and disturbed by the announcement.

"They told me that I cannot write my examinations. The department told me to wait until next year. They also told me that I did not pass Grade 11, even though my report indicates a different story," she said.

"I have been attending Grade 12 with other pupils without a problem, and I don't know why these problems are only cropping up now."

After receiving the information, her family went to the school to verify the news but were instead sent from pillar to post.

"It is impossible that one can attend class and never write examinations," said Refilwe's mother Victoria Mathebe.

She said the school had told her to let the matter rest and that they would pay her daughter's school fees next year. "But I don't want their money. All I want is for my daughter to sit her examinations."

The family have now decided to take the legal route if the matter is not resolved.

The department yesterday said the school was the one that caused the whole drama. Spokesperson Ndo Mangala said they were going to investigate.

The school's principal, Seyi Olamide, refused to comment on the matter.
