Mda, an MP, was suspended last week after allegedly calling Cope deputy general secretary Deirdre Carter a "stupid, white token bitch".
But an e-mail to the media from Cope member Sibusiso Zwane says Carter first called Mda "a criminal kaffir who should be thrown out of Cope because she can't lead".
"Anele (responded) by saying 'You have always complained of being treated like a token, you are now really acting like one'," claims Zwane.
Mpumalanga and Limpopo youth wings say they don't accept Mda's suspension.
"We have met with shock and astonishment the alleged suspension of Anele for reasons not known by the leaders of the youth in provinces and even members of the national steering committee. We will treat this decision as a witchhunt and an extension of the offensive that is directed at Anele as a person," Cope's Mpumalanga youth league wrote to party general secretary Charlotte Lobe.
In another e-mail, leaked to Sowetan, Limpopo convenor Sylvester Hlakudi says Mda's suspension is "a continued demonstration of the contempt in which Cope holds its youth movement".
Hlakudi accuses Cope's central working committee of failing to support the youth movement.
"Members of CopeYM traversed the country from their own pockets and implemented the programme of action with no support from the CWC," he writes.
Another e-mail from Sefu Sekgala to Lobe says: "There have emerged many unruly characters within Cope, who have in most cases disrupted Cope meetings and established parallel structures. I'm yet to hear of any action against theseindividuals."
But Lobe claimed she had not received any e-mails, saying due process would be followed to prove whether or not Mda is innocent.
Mda refused to comment.
