MORULENG residents' thirst for top-flight football could be a thing of the past, thanks to the opening of a football stadium in Rustenburg on Saturday.
The opening of the 20000-seater Moruleng Stadium was attended by among others, Bakgatla ba Kgafela Chief Nyalala John Pilane.
"We've shown that we can do things without the involvement of government," Pilane said, adding that the stadium cost R174million.
"We are also going to build a private hospital, a public clinic, a civic centre, a multimedia library and a mall.
"This will help to alleviate poverty and empower our youth," he said. "We hope to have everything done by 2020."
It was announced that Platinum Stars will play at this stadium if the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace is unavailable.
The last time Moruleng had a professional team was when Moruleng Diplomats, which had in their books Aubrey "Sense of Knowledge" Lekoane and Sonas Malope and was campaigned in the then Bopsol, in the then Bophuthatswana.
Residents enjoyed an entertaining football match between PSL side Platinum Stars and Botswana's Mochudi Centre Chiefs. Stars won 2-1.
