"I was impressed the way the team kept composure under difficult circumstances especially towards the end of the game," he said.
But the Springboks vice-captain strongly believes Bulls still have put in a lot of work to attain their semifinals' aspirations.
Their first hurdle is Griquas on Saturday and Leopards in Rustenburg.
Last weekend's victory keeps Bulls in fourth spot on the log with 38 points two points behind third-placed Griquas.
Matfield said it was a close game and they almost let the Free Staters off the hook after a 20-10 lead at the break.
Bulls went to sleep to allow Cheetahs to score 17 points compared to their 10.
He added that they will have to pull all the stops to win their last two games spot on the log.
The Bulls' scorers: Gerhard van den Heever, Dewald Potgieter and Wynand Olivier (tries). Morne Steyn (three penalties and three conversions).
The Cheetahs: Fabian Juries (two penalties) and Lionel Mapoe (try). Conversions: Jacques-Louis Potgieter (three conversion and two penalties).
Meanwhile, Sharks consolidated their top spot with a 34-20 triumph over Leopards in Durban.
At Ellis Park Stadium, Lions showed no mercy when they routed Boland 88-15 and the Griqaus lost 43-3 to the Western Province in Cape Town.
