TAXI bosses in KwaZulu-Natal are working jointly with the provincial police to end the violence that isscaring away commuters.
In the latest incident on Wednesday a taxi driver was shot and killed and a woman passenger critically wounded when a gunman attacked them. The vehicle was travelling outside Pietermaritzburg when theincident happened.
KZN Transport Alliance general secretary Bongani Mhlongo said yesterday they were concerned about the continuing violence in the industry.
More than 20 people have been gunned down in taxi-related violence in the province this year.
Mhlongo said current talks with senior police were aimed at developing a comprehensive plan to bring peace to the volatile industry.
"The idea is to deal with the complex issues that are causing the deaths. We are in the final stages of a proposal that will be handed to the MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Willies Mchunu."
Mhlongo said initial investigations showed that the industry was fraught with a number of conflicts, ranging from greed to power struggles and blatant disrespect for the law.
He said the action plan would also involve commuters and businesses.
He also said training of taxi drivers in a bid to curb the high number of road deaths was a key priority in the plan.
