POLICE in Mpumalanga a have launched a high level investigation after an officer was shot dead on Tuesday.

POLICE in Mpumalanga a have launched a high level investigation after an officer was shot dead on Tuesday.

Inspector Eric Mfana Mashego, who worked in the VIP protection unit in Nelspruit, was shot dead by unknown people on Tuesday night.

His killing has left both the police and Mashego's family baffled.

Police say Mashego, 39, of Chochocho village outside Hazyview, was gunned down by three unknown men at about 8pm on Tuesday while on his way home from work.

Masoyi police spokesperson Inspector Jiyela Sibiya said Mashego's murder was still shrouded in mystery.

"Three men came from behind with an R5 rifle and without saying anything shot him in the back. He died on the scene.

Mashego leaves behind his wife Thembi Hlatshwayo and nine children.
