Initiative to revive coal sector in KZN

A KWAZULU-NATAL Collieries Association cluster has been formed to revive the province's once successful coal mining industry.

The captains in the coal mining industry have reached agreement on the way forward after discussions with Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN) earlier this week.

A key feature of the discussions was the reopening of the Ngagane power station in Newcastle.

"The session was to unpack challenges faced by the coal mining industry and to forge a way forward to resolve these issues with working solutions," said the chief executive of TIKZN Zamo Gwala.

The issues and challenges facing the industry include securing export allocation at the Richards Bay Coal Terminal for KZN , market opportunities for coal and anthracite, the reopening of the Ngagane power station and its impact on the coal industry, as well as the establishment of the KwaZulu-Natal Collieries Association.

"The working group is a platform for creative problem-solving in the provincial mining sector," said Gwala.
