Top field for Ussa champs

TOP South African middle-distance athletes will invade Johannesburg on September 28 and 29 for the University Sport South Africa cross country championships.

TOP South African middle-distance athletes will invade Johannesburg on September 28 and 29 for the University Sport South Africa cross country championships.

Glen Bentley, Ussa athletics chairperson, said the yearly event will take place at the University of Johannesburg.

Sibabalwe Mzazi, who won a gold medal at the World Student Games in Serbia in July, is among the big names who will take part in this event.

"It is true that I will be competing in the cross country, the plan is to use it to end the year on a high note," Mzazi said.

Also coming to Jozi is Elroy Galant, who won bronze in Serbia.

"We are honoured that almost all the big names who are also furthering their studies have confirmed their participation in the championships," Bentley said.

Other household names include Ruben Ramolefi, Johan Cronje and Stephen Mokoka, who is the national half marathon champion.

Ramolefi and Cronje represented South Africa at the World Championships in Berlin.

Bentley said the event would also be used to select a provisional squad to represent South Africa at the World Student Cross Country Championships in Canada next year.
