SOUTH Africa is developing a thriving early childhood development culture and system through the yearly Absa and Sowetan ECD Awards, writes Victor Mecoamere.

It is sponsored and run in association with SABC Education, the national Education Department, South African Congress for Early Childhood Development, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund and Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

This crucial nation-building programme is to encourage and ensure the professional development of ECD practitioners. It also focuses on the development of infrastructure, improvement and support of ECD centres, resources and further training of ECD organisations.

They include caregivers, teachers and managers of ECD centres, crèches and kindergartens - as well as the tutors and organisations that nurture the teaching staff.

The awards given are for best resource and training organisations, home-based centres or playgroups, practitioners and community based centres. An additional award recognising and acknowledging innovative ECD programmes has been introduced.

Post entries to SABC Education Outreach, Private Bag X 345, Melville, 2109. For details, call 086-22-22-592, fax 086-51-45-592, e-mail: outreach@sabc.co.za or visit www.sabceducation.co.za or www.sowetan.co.za
