THE 4th Soweto Mushroom Festival kicks off on October 30.

THE 4th Soweto Mushroom Festival kicks off on October 30.

The festival will feature celebrity chefs Citrum Khumalo and Phineas Lepuru, who will prepare tasty dishes at Maponya Mall.

Revellers will be treated to mushroom-cooking demonstrations and lots of exciting prizes.

Supported by the South African Mushroom Farmers Association and Soweto Tourism Association, the festival will run until the end of October.

The aim of the festival is to highlight the versatility of freshly cultivated mushrooms for any meal of the day.

Mushrooms have a distinct flavour when cooked and can even be eaten raw.

They are a favourite among weight-watchers and the health conscious because they are virtually fat and cholesterol-free.

"We are delighted with the support we are getting from local chefs who are creating authentic African mushroom recipes," Samfa chairperson Ross Richardson said.
