NEWLY appointed Kwazulu-Natal MEC for local government and traditional affairs Nomusa Dube has vowed to clean up all local government structures to ensure service delivery to the poor.
She warned that she would act against municipalities and local government structures that fail to deliver.
Dube said the challenges facing municipalities were now in the public arena following a series of media reports on corruption and mismanagement.
"I am in the process of taking practical steps towards improving local government as it is crucial to service delivery," Dube said.
Speaking in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, Dube said she has had discussions with municipal Integrated Development Plan (IDP) managers and planners to improve local government.
"In our ongoing campaign to build a province characterised by equality and prosperity, it is required of all the spheres of government to work in sync in order to realise this objective," she said.
Dube said the department has been given a renewed mandate of ensuring that government work is correctly co-ordinated and to ensure that local government is guided and supported through its work, to avoid a continual injection of funds into structures that are dysfunctional.
"IDP managers and planners are the engines that drive the economic development and prosperity of nations."
She urged officials to understand that their sole purpose was to improve the lives of the poor.
"This requires all of us to work with one another in order to take our province to a better development trajectory.
"I expect IDPs to say what each municipality will do to meet the priorities set."
