Politics aside, transformation remains a sticky issue. Top positions remain a whites-only club, and they only allow those blacks they deem fit into the club. No one can claim natural rights to certain positions. If real transformation is to take place, we must make sure that blacks occupy and dominate top positions.
The previous administration spoke openly about the issue, but lacked the will to act. The current administration appears to be action oriented, which bodes well for transformation.
I think Siyabonga Gama should be appointed Transnet's chief executive and I'm glad the ANC and its alliance partners think so too. From what I've read, he has earned his stripes and deserves the job.
Allegations against Gama are a strategy to get him out of the way. We should not allow that to happen. We have witnessed similar cases before and we did nothing about them . We can no longer turn a blind eye to such injustice simply because of skin colour .
According to media reports, Minister of Public Enterprises Barbara Hogan is unwilling to appoint Gama. No surprises there. This would be the second time she defied her party. Hogan, who is fast becoming the darling of the media and is also regarded as independent, should be reminded that she represents the ANC. If she has a different agenda to that of the ruling party, she should resign. Otherwise, she must be recalled.
The Gama saga is an opportunity to fast track transformation. And we dare not let this opportunity pass us by. Otherwise, real transformation will never take place.
