mayweather a cut above the rest

ENORMOUSLY gifted American boxer Floyd "Money" Mayweather proved beyond any reasonable doubt yesterday morning that he is made of sterner stuff.

ENORMOUSLY gifted American boxer Floyd "Money" Mayweather proved beyond any reasonable doubt yesterday morning that he is made of sterner stuff.

Lovemore "Black Panther" Ndou, who assisted Mayweather, 32, with sparring when he was preparing for Oscar de la Hoya, and yours truly tipped Mayweather to outclass Juan Manuel Marquez, 36.

Sceptics saw red. In fact, Sowetan had anticipated fierce action for almost eight rounds and a stoppage in the later rounds.

Mayweather almost ended it in two as he dropped Marquez for a count. Marquez quickly got up - but his confidence was gone.

He buried his head deep in his chest as he walked back to his corner after the round, while Mayweather walked tall back to his corner - which was manned by uncle Roger Mayweather.

After five rounds, frustration was written all over Marquez's face. He just could not figure him out.

Mayweather is the kind of guy that if you don't get his respect in the first 30 seconds of the fight, then the contest is over.

Mayweather meticulously squashed the pesky Mexican's offensive attack in the last three rounds when he (Marquez) threw caution to the wind.

"I think he brought his best out tonight. I take my hat off to him. He is a great fighter," said Mayweather after the gruelling 12 rounds.

The judges scored the contest 118-109, 120-107, 119-108 in favour of "Pretty Boy". The former champion in five different weight divisions remains undefeated after 40 fights (25 KOs).

Marquez, former world champion in three weight divisions, on the other hand suffered his fifth defeat in 54 fights.

A reported crowd of about 14000 filled the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, US, to see the fight.

l Back home, South Africa's Macbute "Pac Man" Sinyabi blew Tendani Munyai away in two rounds to retain his South African featherweight title at Orient Theatre on Friday night.

l On Friday morning, Kaizer Mabuza, the current SA welterweight holder, added the IBF Intercontinental belt in his cabinet after outpointing Sergey Fedchenko in Ukraine.
