BUSINESS people in Mpumalanga want the Mbombela municipality to give contracts to locals - instead of to people from other provinces.

BUSINESS people in Mpumalanga want the Mbombela municipality to give contracts to locals - instead of to people from other provinces.

This came to light when businesspeople tried to meet Mbombela mayor Lassy Chiwayo on Friday but the meeting failed to take place.

One of the businessmen, who spoke to Sowetan on condition of anonymity, said the business community had now scheduled another meeting for today when Chiwayo was expected to attend.

The businessman cited people such as Bobby Motaung, son of Kaizer Chiefs' boss Kaizer Motaung, who lives in Johannesburg and who won a tender connected to the construction of the 2010 Mbombela Stadium.

"Another example was when Ehlanzeni municipality hired a firm from Joburg to manage an event to involve Swaziland and Mozambique in the coming World Cup."

Chiwayo said the business community were employing the wrong strategies to meet their demands.

"We are aware of a group of people who stormed municipal offices . I must point out that some of the concerns are genuine and our door is open for us to address them."
