BAFANA Bafana coach Joel Santana is in denial. He lives in the land of make-believe and pretends that everything in the camp is cosy going into the World Cup finals.
We are just 264 days away from the kickoff of the spectacular and Santana is still clueless about the way forward in turning Bafana into a winning side.
His selection of the team is pathetic and his tactical and technical nous is questionable. The man needs help but he unashamedly told his bosses at Safa last week he does not need any assistance outside his current technical staff. He should bow his head in shame for what he did to Bafana.
They might have tried hard not to be seen as harshly criticising the coach in public, but his employers are far from happy with his techniques.
Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan rightfully told journalists in Durban last week the issue of team performance has to be addressed urgently. He lamented our failure to score goals and warned that Bafana have to perform to create lasting memories for the supporters. We fully agree with you, Dr Jordaan.
Interestingly, people like President Jacob Zuma and Lucas Radebe believe that Benni McCarthy could solve our scoring drought. To me McCarthy is a non-issue.
We have players who can score goals but they need a pattern that will make it easy for them to score.
But with Santana's defensive approach strikers will have limited opportunities to score.
On Saturday we struggled to beat the lowly Madagascar at home. No wonder only a few people celebrated the win. Safa must bring coaches worth their salt to help poor Santana. Rope in Gavin Hunt and Gordon Igesund.
