Welcome return for Grobbelaar

LIONS left flank Cobus Grobbelaar makes a welcome return to retake the captaincy ahead of their Absa Currie Cup clash against the Griquas at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley tomorrow at 3pm.

LIONS left flank Cobus Grobbelaar makes a welcome return to retake the captaincy ahead of their Absa Currie Cup clash against the Griquas at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley tomorrow at 3pm.

Grobbelaar was part of the starting XV announced by coach Hans Coetzee at a press conference in Johannesburg yesterday.

The energetic Grobbelaar missed last weekend's match against the Leopards at Ellis Park Stadium due to a shoulder injury.

Speaking to Sowetan after yesterday's briefing, Grobbelaar admitted that overcoming Griquas on the road would be a huge task.

But he said it would make a little difference where they play the game as they need a bonus points win by hook or crook to reach the semifinals.

"During the past training session we worked on our defence, set-pieces and ball distribution," Grobbelaar said.

"The boys are now in fine fettle and more focused for Saturday's (tomorrow's) match.

"They are confident of bringing home the bacon come match day.

"From the start of the season we have had new structures and new faces and have been building nicely since.

"We are starting to gain momentum and continuity, which is vital in any team," he said.

The Lions are sixth on the log with 26 points from 10 matches, eight behind third-placed Griquas.

In another match tomorrow, Boland host the Bulls in Wellington at 3pm, while defending champions the Sharks cross swords with the Cheetahs in Durban at 5.05pm.

In the only game billed for today the Leopards welcome Western Province in Potchefstroom. Kickoff is at 7.10pm.
