Thabo Makunyane has a Range Rover and a Pajero allocated to him for his mayoral duties.
His driver uses the Range Rover, while the Pajero is being used to ferry children of senior municipal officials to school.
It is also allegedly being used to run errands for officials.
Makunyane has seldom made use of the services of his official driver, who earns about R10000 a month.
Municipal policy stipulates that only one car should be allocated to the mayor.
Sources said the Range Rover cost about R900000, while the Pajero cost about R500000.
The cars' petrol is also being paid for by the taxpayers.
New Vision Party councillor in the municipality, Ngako Setjie, yesterday called for disciplinary action to be taken against Makunyane.
"There is no way we can allow the situation to continue unchallenged under the current recession.
"Makunyane must account," he said.
Congress of the People's Matlagolo Mphahlele said Makunyane should not be allowed to "ride the crest of the wave" using municipal resources, while the money used for the purchase of the second car could have been used for service delivery projects.
Municipal spokesperson Simon Mokoatedi said Makunyane had only been allocated the Range Rover as his official car.
As for the Pajero, Mokoatedi said it was only attached to the mayor's office to provide other essential duties of the municipality as it was no longer his official car and was being used as a pool car.
