THE nationwide strike by more than 50000 textile workers is set tocontinue until at least Sunday.
The South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (Sactwu) said yesterday it needed until tomorrow to ask its members if they would accept a new offer of an 8percent salary increase. Clothing manufacturers have given the union until Sunday to respond to their offer.
The union has demanded 11,5percent for rural workers.
"We are not happy that clothing manufacturers are not prepared to move above eight percent for our rural members," Sactwu deputy general-secretary Wayne van der Rheede told Sowetan yesterday.
Clothing and textile workers in places like Newcastle, Ladysmith, Isithebe, Botshabelo and QwaQwa earn only R399 a week.
The 8percent offer also comes with conditions attached - most of which already rejected by the union.
