THE current situation in which some private sector companies are raking in millions from government by working in cahoots with corrupt officials, could soon be a thing of the past.
Yesterday Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said his ministry had come up with a new procurement system that would stop corrupt officials from fraudulently spending between R50 billion and R80billion every year on procurement and new projects.
He said procurement was decentralised six years ago to give provincial governments the power to do the buying.
"But clearly that has led to misuse," he said.
He also slammed the private sector for participating in corruption.
"The actual beneficiaries are businesspeople who are on the other side of the tender," he said.
