UNIVERSITY of Limpopo alumni are urged to support the institution's 2009 Annual Benefit Gala Dinner.

It takes place at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng, on November 6.

The fundraiser will coincide with the awarding of the Onkgopotse Tiro Excellence Awards and the official launch of the university's alumni.

The University of Limpopo emerged from the merger between the University of the North and Medical University of South Africa in January 2005.

Sowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation are the event's media, publicity and nation-building partners.

Building on the visionary establishment of the university's Students Financial Aid Trust by the university's students representative council of 1995-1996, the event seeks to boost the trust's financial resources to continue providing financial assistance to underprivileged students.

This fund has contributed significantly to the wellbeing of financially needy and academically deserving students. It has been awarding bursaries since 1999.

So far, the trust has awarded bursaries to 310 students at a maximum of R10000 each. Successful students are selected during the SRC's annual general meetings. It has thus far allocated more than R2,9million to needy students.

The Onkgopotse Tiro Excellence Awards are awarded in recognition of outstanding achievers associated with the University of Limpopo.

An unflinching black consciousness movement adherent, Tiro was the SRC president in his final year, when he delivered a speech that sharply criticised the Bantu Education Act of 1953 at the university's graduation ceremony in 1972.
