Thozamile Taki told the court he had been severely assaulted by police before he drew up a list of 13 people who the state accused him of having killed.
He said the police had forced him to rewrite a list of names on another piece of paper.
Taki is accused of killing 13 women and dumping their bodies in sugar-cane plantations in Umzinto, KwaZulu-Natal, and tea plantations in Port St Johns in Eastern Cape.
Taki, who was arrested in September 2007, also faces 13 counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
His girlfriend, Hlengiwe Nene, has been charged as an accessory to the 13 robberies. The trial continues. - Sapa
