THE KwaZulu-Natal department of education has unveiled a multi-million rand bursary scheme to address the shortage of skilled and qualified mathematics, commerce, computer studies and technology teachers.

THE KwaZulu-Natal department of education has unveiled a multi-million rand bursary scheme to address the shortage of skilled and qualified mathematics, commerce, computer studies and technology teachers.

The department has set aside R9262931 in bursaries to assist needy students. Spokesperson Mbali Thusi said the department will offer 121 bursaries to Grade 12 pupils interested in pursuing a teaching career next year.

This is another initiative by the department to attract students to enter the teaching profession. This, the department reasons, will encourage even students from very poor families to study.

"There are very few teachers that are being injected into the system in these 'scarce skills subjects'. We need more," said Thusi.

"Getting more students to enter the teaching profession to qualify in these important subjects will definitely bring the required benefits in years to come.

"We urge all schools in the province to inform their pupils about these opportunities so that no one can say they did not know about these bursaries.

"Instead of sitting at home after matric, interested students can apply."

Applicants have to be between the ages of 18 and 35.

They must have studied at a KwaZulu-Natal school for at least three years. Thusi said application forms are available at all district offices throughout the province.

She added that the bursaries will offer opportunities to needy students to further their studies and better their lives.
