THE death toll from the H1N1 virus in KwaZulu-Natal has risen to five.
The authorities confirmed yesterday that a doctor who died last month had contracted the H1N1 virus.
Irshad Moola of KwaDukuza, north of Durban, died at a local private hospital after a short illness.
His family and the provincial department of health confirmed that the doctor died of swine flu after falling ill with what appeared to be flu symptoms.
His bereaved father Farouk Moola said his son was admitted to hospital complaining of difficulty breathing and experiencing flu-like symptoms and died two days later.
"My son died of the H1N1 flu after being ill for two days," he said.
"His death was so sudden and is a great loss to the family."
Moola had been working at KwaDukuza Hospital for five years . He is the first health practitioner to die of swine flu.
The virus has claimed the lives of more than 30 people in South Africa and about 11253 have been infected in the past few months .
