The robbers hijacked the cash van after firing shots at security guards at a garage in Graskop on Monday. Two DNN Security guards were collecting money from various businesses in Mpumalanga Lowveld, including a BP garage near the Rus 'n Biki complex in Graskop, at about 1.30pm.
One of the guards went inside the garage to collect money while the other remained in the vehicle.
Police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi told Sowetan that a group of about 20 heavily armed men started firing shots at the security vehicle, injuring the guard who had remained in the vehicle. "The robbers then dragged out the injured guard before they drove off in the vehicle with cash inside," Hlathi said yesterday.
The security vehicle was later found abandoned in nearby bushes. Its rear window had been broken and all the cash taken.
Four vehicles were used in the heist - a Nissan Hardbody with Mozambican registration numbers (MMM 8163), a S40 Volvo (CVP 619 MP), a Toyota Quantum and a BMW.
Hlathi said the Nissan and the Volvo were later found abandoned at Mkhuhlu near Hazyview.
"The Nissan was reported stolen at KaNyamazane on September 10, while the Volvo was reported stolen at KaBokweni on August 21," Hlathi said.
