AFU head Willie Hofmeyr is expected to hand over the forfeited BMW 320i, worth about R280000, to executive mayor David Magabe today.
This after the AFU had obtained a variation of the forfeiture order to make provision for it to hand the car to the municipality.
The car, according to the AFU, was acquired under controversial circumstances.
It was discovered that Tsheko Maloma, a security guard at the municipality, had stolen a Vodacom 3G card from the municipality in November 2007.
Maloma allegedly used the card to participate in the Vodacom "100 cars" competition that ran between November 2007 and March 2008.
He spent a total of R277484 on the card.
On December 7 2007 the card number was drawn as the winner of a BMW 320i.
Vodacom representatives called the number and Maloma allegedly confirmed he was the registered user of the number.
He provided his details and the car was registered in his name and delivered to Menlyn Motors, where he collected it.
After collecting the car Maloma allegedly drove it to McCarthy Motors' Church Street branch in Pretoria, where he made arrangements for them to sell it on his behalf.
A senior official in the municipality, Rupert Matabane, discovered the abuse of the 3G card and contacted Vodacom, who confirmed the car's delivery to Menlyn Motors for the winner to collect. The matter was reported to the Groblersdal police.
An inspector Maphini Mashigoane circulated the car's details and attempted to locate Maloma.
On June 24 last year Mashigoane allegedly received information that the car was at the Groblersdal police station for clearance.
He went there and impounded it.
On hearing about the developments Maloma turned himself in to the police and was charged with theft.
He gotR2000 bail and the matter was referred to the AFU on November 17 2008.
Maloma is appearing in the North Gauteng high court today on fraud charges.
