Zuma's spokesperson, Vusi Mona, said yesterday the high volume of calls resulted in some callers not making it through, but the problem would be rectified soon.
"It was the first day and we will be able to improve the system as time goes by. We are looking at extending the shift to 10pm," Mona said.
The call centre currently operates from 9am to 5pm.
Mona said Zuma answered the first call from a woman in Mount Frere, Eastern Cape, who complained about the ill-treatment she had been receiving from a local magistrate's court.
Another call was from an Ekurhuleni man who complained about sewerage leakages that have disturbed his neighbourhood for months.
The hotline number is 17737. Citizens can also fax their complaints to 086 681 0987. The hotline was launched yesterday. Mona said at least 7261 calls had been received by midday yesterday. This means there were over 2000 calls an hour.
The Democratic Alliance was the first political party to test the hotline and was not pleased.
The DA's Gareth van Onselen complained yesterday that it took a DA member 80 minutes to eventually have his complaint dealt with.
