THE sun is about to shine on one of SA's most prominent mbaqanga groups, which has been nominated for best mbaqanga category of the coming South African Traditional Music Awards.
The nomination is for their recently released album Kwadele'unina.
Welcome Zuma, of Pietermaritzburg, and Sizathu Khuzwayo, of eMthandeni, kwaMaphumulo, make up the group Inkululeko - meaning freedom.
The two artists are no strangers to the music scene, since they paid their dues individually before coming together.
Welcome Zuma found his calling at an early age. He was 14 when he fell in love with the guitar.
Fortunately for him, a neighbour, Nhlanhla Mchunu, owned a guitar and allowed him to use the instrument. With Mchunu's help he eventually discovered that he wanted to be a guitarist.
Zuma formed a group and named it Izisebenzi. The group performed at schools during the late 80s and early 90s. Zuma says he enjoyed every moment of the young group's performances.
Sizathu Khuzwayo headed for Johannesburg in 1991 in search of employment. Eventually he ventured into music. He worked as a backing vocalist for Bhekumuzi Luthuli and other maskandi groups.
In 2004 these two gentlemen met and formed the band nominated for a Satma.
