Premier faces chop

PLANS are afoot in the ANC in Eastern Cape to recall Premier Noxolo Kiviet after the weekend provincial elective conference that saw MEC for health Phumulo Masualle elected the party's provincial chairperson.

PLANS are afoot in the ANC in Eastern Cape to recall Premier Noxolo Kiviet after the weekend provincial elective conference that saw MEC for health Phumulo Masualle elected the party's provincial chairperson.

The conference took a resolution that the provincial executive committee of the ANC should devise a strategy to ensure there would be no "two centres of power" between the premier and her new political boss.

Sowetan has learnt that Masualle's backers plan to bulldoze a decision through a provincial general council before December to recall Kiviet and reshuffle the provincial cabinet.

It also emerged in the run-up to the conference that Kiviet supported Masualle's rival, MEC for finance and economic development Mcebisi Jonas.

But, Masualle underplayed any tensions existing between him and Kieviet.

"If the premier had a particular view, she was entitled to that. She should not be punished even if the views did not win the day."
