Mpumalanga police spokesperson Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the 28-year-old policeman was attached to the Nelspruit police station and had completed his probation in June.
Matsulu police received complaints that a group of four robbers had broken into the houses of several residents and robbed them at gunpoint.
"The complainants described the vehicle that the robbers had been travelling in. Police spotted the car with four occupants.
"We searched the car as well as the occupants and found a revolver from the policeman, 17 suspected stolen cellphones and cash," said Khoabane.
He said investigators believed the group was still on its way to commit more crimes when Matsulu police pulled them off the road on Saturday night.
Khoabane said the suspect cop was first appointed as an administration clerk at the provincial police head office, then later became a policeman.
"We are not going to fold our hands and look on as our members get engaged in crime.
"An internal disciplinary process will be initiated against the officer soon and if found guilty chances are he will have to leave the police service," he said.
The four are expected to appear before the Matsulu magistrate's court soon.
Khoabane asked other members of the police to refrain from activities that would land them in trouble with the law as well as causing their dismissal from work.
A number of police officials have recently been arrested in Mpumalanga because of alleged corrupt activities.
