Hotel staff found the bodies two days after the man had checked in at the Isando Garden Court, said police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Noxolo Kweza yesterday.
Kweza said the man's neighbours heard noises coming from his room on Sunday night and went to inquire but got no response.
Hotel cleaners tried to enter the room yesterday morning but found it locked. They eventually entered the room through the balcony.
They found the father lying dead next to his children, aged two and three. The kids had been shot through their heads. A revolver was found next to the man's body.
Though the police refused to comment further, it is understood the man's family had a long history of domestic problems.
It is also alleged that at the time of the incident, the children's mother had obtained a court interdict against their father.
The children's mother had reported them missing at the Booysens police station at the weekend.
Meanwhile, a student policeman attached to a Soweto police station was arrested for armed robbery yesterday.
Police spokesperson Mbulaheni Netshivhodza said the 29-year-old student policeman and a 34-year-old man were arrested for robbing an ambulance of an undisclosed amount of money in Lenasia.
Netshivhodza said the ambulance crew was driving to a bank to deposit money when a white Colt bakkie with two men in police uniform bumped them from behind. When the ambulance stopped, the crew was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money.
Netshivhodza said the two men were later stopped by police while driving in a different vehicle.
Police seized an unlicensed firearm, money and a police hand radio.
The ambulance crew positively identified the men as those who had robbed them earlier.
The two are expected to appear in the Protea magistrate's court soon.
