The union held a workshop in Johannesburg at the weekend at which a resolution was made prompting members to adhere to its code of conduct.
"The union commits itself to non-negotiables, including that teachers must be on time, prepared for class and behave professionally in accordance to our code of conduct," Sadtu spokesperson Nomusa Cembi said.
Sadtu has responded strongly against members who sexually abuse school children.
"The union unequivocally condemns the minority of teachers whose bad behaviour, particularly the sexual abuse of learners, brings the profession into disrepute," Cembi said.
She said the union would petition the department to prioritise the safety of children in schools.
She said the union would also liaise with the department to ensure it meets its commitments in terms of providing basic infrastructure and manageable class sizes.
She also said Sadtu would force the employer to table its plans for the implementation of the occupation specific dispensation (OSD).
"The employer is given until September 30 to declare available funds for implementing the OSD," she said.
"Failing this a special national education committee will be convened to respond appropriately."
