A PIETERMARITZBURG man allegedly bludgeoned his girlfriend to death with a hammer and then hanged himself next to her lifeless body on Saturday.
A friend of the man had gone to check on him and made the gruesome discovery.
Locals say the man was last seen on Saturday morning buying beers at a local tavern.
When his friend went to check on him that afternoon he found the man hanging from the roof. Next to him on the bed lay the body of his girlfriend.
The woman had bruises all over her body and head. Police believe the couple had been quarreling and that the man fatally assaulted her with a hammer.
The police identified the couple as Njabulo Madlala, 25, and Zandile Khanyile, 21, of Sweetwaters.
Police spokesperson Inspector Joey Jeevan said initial investigations had established that the man had fetched his girlfriend on Friday from her house.
"It is believed that during the course of Friday evening they had had an argument and that an altercation ensued that resulted in Madlala seriously beating Khanyile about the head with a hammer and fatally wounding her," Jeevan said.
She confirmed that Madlala's friend made the gruesome discovery that afternoon and contacted the police. He was concerned because Madlala had not turned up for work.
"The reason for the incident is believed to have been a domestic altercation. A postmortem will be conducted to determine cause of death. We are busy investigating the incident," Jeevan said.
