AT a time when the SABC is cutting down on local productions by R500million because of its financial woes, its private competitor e.tv is launching five local drama series.

The free-to-air channel's general manager of local productions, Zanele Mthembu, has announced that the five dramas will be screened from October.

All five of the productions were shot on location in Soweto, mostly in the homes of locals.

They were directed by veteran producer and director Vusi Twala.

Many actors, with the exception of a few such as Magic Hlatswayo and Mfana-Jones Hlophe, are first-time actors.

Delwazi "Deli" Phillips, from the West Rand, was one of the actors lucky to be chosen for a lead role in Mama's Boy.

"Yes, I am a first- time actress who got a major role," she said smiling.

Another surprise first-timer was veteran radio man Treasure Tshabalala, who made a name for himself at Metro FM.

"Shooting the series in people's homes in Soweto and in some cases using local talent has added authenticity to township stories," said Mthembu. "Depending on the commercial viability of this series, this is just the beginning of more stories emanating from Soweto."

The series examines the lives of ordinary township folk, with themes such as crime and love.

Secret Lovers and Mama's Boy will be screened from October 12, Abducted begins on October 19, A good Wife starts on October 26 and Chasing the Truth begins on November 2.
