SOUTH Africa's future depends on a thriving early childhood development culture and system, writes Victor Mecoamere

A nation-building programme nurturing well-rounded future leaders is the Absa and Sowetan ECD Awards. It is sponsored and run in association with SABC Education, the national Education Department, South African Congress for Early Childhood Development and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation BuildingFoundation.

The programme encourages the professional development of ECD practitioners and the infrastructure development, improvement and support of ECD centres and ECD resources and training organisations.

They include caregivers, teachers and managers of ECD centres, crèches and kindergartens - as well as the tutors and organisations that nurture teaching staff.

Awards are given for best resource and training organisations, home-based centre or playgroups, practitioners and community based centres. An additional award recognising and acknowledging innovative ECD programmes has been introduced.

Post entries to SABC Education Outreach, Private Bag X 345, Melville, 2109. For details, call 086-22-22-592, fax 086-51-45-592, e-mail: outreach@sabc.co.za or visit www.sabceducation.co.za or www.sowetan.co.za
