A 29-year-old Alexandra mother was scheduled to leave for Limpopo yesterday to bury her father, but instead spent the day behind bars for child abandonment.

Alexandra police arrested the woman after she gave birth to a baby boy at home and hid the child in her shack instead of going to a clinic.

Neighbours Onicca Ledwaba, 55, and Sinah Ramogale, 42, were the first to arrive at the scene and found the woman bleeding. The baby boy still had the umbilical cord attached to him.

The women took the baby to Alexandra police station and the mother was arrested.
