GOVERNMENT is considering setting up a central bidding fund to help sports organisations bid for international events once the 2010 Fifa World Cup is over.

Early next year, the tourism and sports and recreation departments will release a five-year plan setting out exactly which international sporting events South Africa will bid for.

This is part of the plan to ensure that venues upgraded for 2010 become economically viable.

Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said yesterday that SA could not afford to let the R28billion investment in 2010 stadiums go to waste. He said his department would work closely with sporting associations in formulating bids for major international events. - Anna Majavu
