TWO security guards were wounded in a failed cash-in-transit heist in Randfontein yesterday.

Captain Appel Ernst said four men opened fire on the guards outside the Spar in Randgate when they got out of their armoured vehicle to deliver and collect money.

"Although the guards did not fire back, the would-be robbers abandoned their heist attempt after wounding the guards and robbing them of their firearms," Ernst said.

They then drove away in three cars.

Police recovered two of the cars minutes after the incident, said Ernst.

Netcare 911 spokesman Nick Dollman said one of the guards was shot in his arm and the other in his leg.

Both are now in a stable condition in hospital. - Sapa
