Bones of whites stolen from graves

GRAVE robbers have struck again in Mpumalanga, this time stealing bones from the graves of an elderly couple, Alec Roberts and his wife Phyllis, on the farm Houtboshoek near Ngodwana.

It is not clear when the robberies took place but Ngodwana police spokesperson Constable Ngoako Kgofela said that farmworkers employed by the couple's daughter, Gail Roberts, made the discovery on Tuesday.

"We went there to investigate and have opened cases of violation of graves ," Kgofela said yesterday.

He said the police were urging the community to visit their family members' graves to check if they were still in good condition.

This is the third time this year that graves were reportedly vandalised and bones stolen in Mpumalanga.

A number of graves were tampered with in Kaapsehoop as well as White River early this year.

In nearly every instance bones of white people were stolen and police believe they were used for muti purposes because there was a prevalent belief that body parts of white people can help make people very rich.

Kgofela said anyone with information that could lead to the arrests of the culprits should contact the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
