NYDA focuses on youth plight

THE New Youth Development Agency yesterday outlined its key performance areas aimed at addressing challenges faced by the country's youth.

The NYDA leadership unpacked the strategy to address unemployment, skills shortage, crime and HIV-Aids.

On top of the NYDA list is the participation of the youth in mainstream economy. "We want to move from just giving young people start-up capital and leave them struggling. Offering them mentorship will help them expand their enterprises," chairperson Andile Lungisa said.

The NYDA was officially launched by President Jacob Zuma on June 16 after the merger of the National Youth Commission and Umsobomvu Youth Fund.

A total of R930million has been allotted to the NYDA in the current financial year so the agency could deliver on all its promises.
