A 15-YEAR-OLD girl from Somkhele reserve in Mtubatuba, northern Zululand, fended off her would-be rapist by biting him.

Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the incident happened when the girl got a lift from the suspect.

"The girl escaped through the window after the 30-year-old man tried to rape her in his car.

"She managed to escape after biting him in the ribs," Mdletshe said.

He said the man had offered the girl a lift on her way home from school on Tuesday.

"She did not know him but rode in his car. After giving her a lift he took a different route, parked the car and tried to rape the girl.

"The victim and the suspect fought in the car and the girl bit the man and managed to escape through the window," he said.

The girl alerted her family, who informed the police and the man was arrested.

The suspect was due to appear in the KwaMsane magistrate's court late yesterday.

Meanwhile, the body of a 75-year-old pensioner, Yezile Duma, was found by cattle herders in the Mphumane area near Mbongolwane.

The woman was burnt to death by veld fires.

The police suspected that Duma was caught unaware by the veld fires on Saturday after she had attended a neighbour's function.

Police have opened an inquest docket to determine the cause of death.
