UNIVERSITY of Pretoria's annual SRC election has been suspended temporarily after a protest by a small group of black students.

The "Student Front", consisting of the ANCYL and Sasco, yesterday disrupted elections , demanding they be held on a party-political basis.

Young Communist League spokesperson Gugu Ndima said: "We shall not recognise the racist outcome of apartheid-style SRC elections."

Acting vice-chancellor Chris de Beer said: "We will meet with the Student Front . We regret the behaviour of the particular students."

AfriForum Youth's Ernst Roets said: "Acts of vandalism took place and racist slogans were chanted ."
