SELDOM do we - as a nation - pause and spare a thought for thousands of men and women in uniform who stake their lives to protect all of us in accordance with the Constitution.

Still unfathomable to many of us is the highly stressful environment in which the police operate and especially the grim reality foisted on them by national duty fraught with dangers that have already claimed the lives of hundreds of their colleagues.

It's common knowledge that the police's job is not for the fainthearted. Any crime scene carries the risk of the police being outmanoeuvred by criminals boasting greater fire power. A poignant testimony to this is the yearly death toll figures. A total of 105 officers died between April last year and March this year.

We salute the fallen heroes and heroines - and their colleagues currently on the beat.
